COLLECTION| Eugene Lin SS14
Last season brought us a continuation of the adored aesthetic of the collection ‘Judgement of Paris’. This season Eugene Lin presented to Freemason’s Hall his SS14 collection entitled ‘Valkyrie’. Inspired by Norse mythology, Eugene created a collection that presents women as a powerful tribe with a beautiful exterior yet is intensely formidable.
Loud digital prints and embellishments were
the primary aspect of Eugene’s SS13 collection, however this year the Central
Saint Martins student has created a collection that is devoid of all that we
have seen previously.
A deluxe and clean-cut aesthetic,
impeccably tailored separates, and sculpted dresses prove that as a label
Eugene Lin consistently produces creativity with function.
Worsted wool folds and fine wool crepe creases demonstrate an experimentation with altering silhouettes.
Feather prints and textured cuffs add to
the tribal element that the ‘Valkyrie’ inspired and a matte colour palette juxtaposes
with patent shoes and unique coatings adding a primitive fresh and wet
look.
Eugene Lin’s creations were compelling on
the catwalk.

BACKSTAGE| Eugene Lin
We went backstage before the highly
anticipated presentation from Singapore born, London based designer
Eugene Lin. With the man himself being prepped for an interview with
Toni&Guy team, and The Body Shop head make up artist Lan
Nguyen-Grealis mid-demonstration; I managed to speak to the head hair
stylist; Richard Mannah on the concept for the show and how it was
being translated.
“Eugene wanted these girls to look
fierce, bold and strong. Female Amazonian warriors emerging out of
the water going to battle basically. So, the way we have done the
hair; is all off the face from the sides, through the top, you know a ponytail. So it gives that warrior feeling about the hair...With a
lot of hairspray through the sides so it look really glossy and a lot
of gel through the top to make as though they have emerged from the
water, so it gives that very wet finish through the top.
His clothes actually have the same
thing going on; there is a contrast with shine and matt together so
that's the type of direction I kind of moved into with the hair. The
best products we used for this show is the Label.m Volume Mousse as a
prepping agent, Hairspray and Holding Gloss through the sides and
Label.m gel through the top to give it that real shine and wet
finish”

With Eugene Lin's AW13 collection hitting the Fashion Scout catwalk this afternoon, we talked to the show's front row on the designer's standout aesthetic.

COLLECTION| Eugene Lin FEB'13
Eugene
Lin returned this season with a continuation of his previous “Judgement of Paris" collection's aesthetic, this time titled “Cupid de Locke”.
Mystical historical figures serve as the backdrop of inspiration for
this beautiful collection, taking the story of Eros (Cupid), Aphrodite and
Helen of Troy into the reality of his pieces.
Lin reworked the Trench with a streamlined feminine cut, turning the urban girl into a power woman. Eugene Lin is praised for infusing creativity with function, and the altered silhouettes and embellishment proved that. Eugene Lin pulls apart
this wardrobe classic into new forms that put pockets and seams askew making
new proportions on the body.
A modern interpretation of the contrast between the
involuntary violence and fragility of love, the Singapore born designer creates
motifs that string together the fluidity of contoured dresses with the
structured tailoring of heavy jackets. Gold accents the collection made up of
black, plum, and coral with a beautifully dark pattern of broken glass that
closes the collection.
The Central Saint Martins graduate attracted a large crowd
all eager to see where he goes next with his creativity. Hot tipped to be a
huge success, Eugene has been featured in Vogue, Elle, and Drapers to name a
few. His pattern cutting skills gained him experience working with Roksanda
Ilincic, and has had his pieces praised for their unique balance of comfort and
luxury.
