Shades
of navy, orange and pastel blue hit the runway this morning at
Freemasons Hall thanks to designer Xiao Li. We got to see a really
fun and quirky side to London Fashion Week. London College of
Fashion graduate Xiao Li demonstrated this in The Gallery with
previews of both menswear and ladies' wear this morning.
The
knitwear and scuba mixed collection featured fun, bright and quirky
illustrations of objects embossed onto big scuba tops and jackets.
This included holdall bag illustrations being shrunk down and placed
onto the sides of coats.
It
seems to me the theme of the collection could quite possibly be
inanimate objects as we saw this demonstrated on many pieces, it was
also obvious she was experimenting with size. Clouds were used for
buttons on big oversized coats, perfumes bottles were enlarged and
placed onto long straight dresses along with the same being done with
trench coat prints onto knitwear.
Many
of the jackets had over the top detailing on them in neon orange
placed on top of a pastel blue scuba material., this created a great
contrast. Because of the fabric used the pieces had a lot of shape;
this made the silhouettes interesting and different. Xiao also used
layering with big pieces on top of pin striped fitted trousers on the
models and perhaps an added oversized bag.
I
think this collection was fun. The colour palette used is very
different to anything I have seen recently and shouldn’t match
however it really does in this collection. Xiao thought out of the
box with how she can make knitwear really exciting with the ‘stay
healthy’ slogans and quirky prints of objects.
