NEWS| Lako Bukia featured on Vogue Italia

Vogue Italia has featured Vauxhall Fashion Scout designer Lako Bukia following the Kiev Fashion Days. The Ukrainian Fashion Week took place between March 22nd - 25th and Vogue Italia has praised the "deceptive effect created with different, deliberately contrasting fabrics and a colour palette limited to black and silver".

The LCF graduate wowed crowds when she showed her AW12 line at VFS's Freemason's Hall in February with her geometric and futuristic inspired collection. Judging by the Vogue Italia article, her appeal is transatlantic. Read the review of the collection on Vogue Italia's website here

Lako Bukia was also interviewed for Kiev Fashion Week's site and was described as 'one of the most promising designers in London'. In the interview, she discusses the pride of showcasing her latest collection at Vauxhall Fashion Scout and the influences of living in London. Read this interview here

COLLECTIONS| VFS Press-Day Picks at A.I PR

Next on the list for the VFS press-room tour was the A.I PR showroom, where designers J.W Anderson and Ann-Sofie Back caught our eye.
Anderson's unapologetically "Awkward Modernity" was presented by way of dense, leather uppers that sit aloft the body, and textured knits that contrasted the patent stoicism of the oxblood, and white rigid suits.
The clinicism of the head-to-toe patent white looks from Anderson's Autumn/Winter collection was something we also saw in Back's sheer nylon overlays, atop raw-finished burgundy wool; a finish referencing how "we all come undone." If by 'undone', Back means 'lose composure', then there's certainly truth in that, as the collection's we spied in the A.I showroom had us keenly hunching over the designers' pieces, excitedly quizzing about fabrics used in each piece.

COLLECTIONS| VFS Press Day Picks at Goodley PR

Leautton Postle AW12

Louise Gray AW12

Krystoff Strozyna AW12

Long-time friends, and design-partners Sam Leutton and Jenny Postle's second collection sat between fellow VFS designers, Krystof Stroznya and Louise Gray in the Goodley PR showroom; and we couldn't walk away without capturing the pieces' details to fully showcase the duo's craft-led knitwear. Leutton Postle's multiplicitous, reverse applique knits hung at home in the showroom's sun-lit space; light hitting every facet of the overlaid metallic patchwork, adding character to the pieces' offbeat, peeping faces.

A half-turn to the right and Louise Gray's equally textured, bright pieces hung; this time letting embellishments and patterned glitter brocade do the talking. Blocked duo-chrome "Quick Response" prints with raw-finished edges called out the punk beneath the opulent-guise, but kept the collection feminine through form.

"Feminine" would be the choice-word for Strozyna's collection- as well as "strong" with the collection's figure enhancing silhouette, in darker hues contrasting to the Leutton Postle and Grey designs either side. Fabrics were less dense, but no less bold, considering the collection's clean-lines, and strong shoulders.

Working with lighter fabrics, Strozyna's pieces showcased a controlled fluidity that moved only to trace the curvature of the woman within it proving Goodley's showcase of works to be full of impact; however that impact manifests...

This is only our first look to the coming season at the Autumn/Winter press days, have we got you looking forward to the rest...?

MAKE-UP TRENDS| How to create the perfect make-up for SS12 with Body Shop

Summer seems to have arrived early in Britain; meaning it's the perfect time to look back to last season at Vauxhall Fashion Scout to remind ourselves of the SS12 trends. VFS Blog Editor, Cass Gowing has interviewed Body Shop's head make-up artist Lan Nguyen to discuss the make-up looks that her team created for SS12.

Vauxhall Fashion Scout: What are the key make-up trends for SS12?
Lan Nguyen: The key make up trends are strong bold and the beautiful, 'The Make-Up Look' Colour and graphic accents also appeared on the catwalk.

VFS: What VFS designers showed this trend?
LN: Examples of the creative strong make-up look at VFS were Elisa Palomino, Inbar Spector, Lako Bukia, A la Dispostion and FAD.

VFS: What's the easiest way for people to wear this trend day-to-day?
LN: The easiest way to wear the trends is to add a strong bold colour in just one area of the face, either just the eye, lip or cheek. Keeping it strong but simple is the key for a wearable look from day to day.

VFS: What's your top tip for making sure that your make-up lasts during warmer climes?
LN: My top tip is to use a face primer.

VFS: What are your favourite Body Shop products to create this look?
LN: My Favourite Body Shop products to create versatile looks are the Shimmer Cubes which are high in pigment and easy to blend, The Lip and Cheek Tint adds a great stain to cheeks and lips which can be layered to add intensity. The lip pencil in Rouge Rose give a beautiful matte deep red colour for lips and can be used as a lipstick or base. Finally the Liquid Eyeliner is a soft pen eyeliner that can be used as a eye base and mixed with the Shimmer Cubes and eyeshadows for intense eye colour.

MENTORING| Vauxhall Fashion Scout present a Sales Mentoring Event for new and emerging British Talent

Speakers: (L-R) Alison Chisholm, Matthew Watters & Erin Mullaney

Vauxhall Fashion Scout are thrilled to be able to host Mentoring Events for emerging talent in British Design. Inviting some of the leading experts in the fashion industry, the events provide an insight into the industry through a blend of question and answer's from invited audience members and the panel of experts.

This Mentoring event saw Orla Kiely, Harvey Nichols and Avenue 32 venture to Beach Blanket Babylon in Shoreditch to talk to an audience of over 50 designers and new talents in the industry.

Don't worry if you missed it... we took notes for you...

When is it best to send your information to a buyer?

- As early as possible is best, to give the buyer chance to go over your information and come back to you.

- During and after London Fashion Week is when buyers are on the look out for new designers. The first couple of weeks after London Fashion Week is best for emerging designers to ensure their designs are seen as this is a key time in the year for buyers.

- Paris Fashion Week is the best time as buyers are more willing to spend money in Paris then London which is often too busy for them to part with their cash!

- June-August, and November-Christmas are the only real 'downtimes' for buyers. So once you contact them, make sure you mention a visit or a follow-up at a later stage when buyers might be more open to dedicate a time to sit and discuss options with you.

- Don't leave long phone messages... they won't get listened to. Emails first thing in the morning are best, especially prior to 9am on the way to office...

- Email Buyer and Assistant Buyer if you can, but avoid emailing them when they are likely to be out of the country- Paris, New York, Milan Fashion Week...

- Agencies such as 'Lambert & Butler' and 'Mint' are good to have on board, and they will carry more weight with a buyer...

Exclusives...

Buyers will always ask for exclusives, and these can work in your favour but they can also work against you...

- Don't limit yourself, especially when it comes to specific countries. You don't want to risk losing orders from other buyers because you've promised an exclusive, especially if it's small boutiques that have a limited market.

- Be prepared to compromise! Exclusives are very in trend, especially with big department stores, so if they want an exclusive you don't want to give, maybe offer an exclusive colour-way instead.

- Magazine Editors in particular are very enthusiastic about exclusives, so some companies will put a large amount of marketing behind exclusive pieces, even if the garment isn't back financially, the press coverage could be just as valuable.

Incentives...

Offering incentives and bonuses for stores could help your brand leave the shop floor...

- Once a sales assistant is passionate or motivated about the brand, they are going to want to push the sales and sell the product to the best of their ability. Even if the garment goes unsold, the information learnt and distributed by the Sales Assistants will be passed onto customers and others in the company- promoting the brand and, more than likely, selling the brand as well.

- Customers like to know about inspirations, stories and meanings behind the garments- as do buyers. If there is an emotional connection to garments as well as aesthetics, then you're brand will look a lot more appealing.

Approaching Buyers...

There are a couple of options for designers when approaching buyers about your collections...

- Agencies or showrooms are always a good idea, but you have to factor in costs as their will be an admin fee plus commission which is normally around 15%-20%.

- You can get lost in big showrooms - those that let you organise your own appointments and sell your own garments like Vauxhall Fashion Scout are the best, as you have complete control.

- Contact buyers yourself if money is a problem and you want full control over the influx of business.

- Look for funding to back your brand. There are so many initiatives out there to support young british talent, that it's a wasted resource if you don't seek them out!

- Platforms, such as Vauxhall Fashion Scout are perfect to launch your brand and invite/meet buyers, plus you have the security and knowledge that you're being looked after.

- If you offer to go to a buyer, rather then them coming to you, it really shows an effort and a sense of importance and pride about your brand...

"Sometimes it's not that we don't want to see the garments, but we might just not have the time to get to you. If you come to us, you're here already, so it's much easier." Harvey Nichols.

- Remember- you always want the best, buyers are interested in what other buyers are purchasing. If you have a good buyer stocking your designs, tell other buyers so they know that you are being sought after! Competition is rife, and you have to make buyers want your designs over everybody else's!

- Distribution is vital for young designers, as you are developing your brand identity in the market. You need to think about who your key customer is, and make sure that the buyers that want your brand have the same key customer in mind for your brand.
Also- always take the big stores that you want first. If it doesn't work out, then smaller boutiques and stores are ideal, but you don't want to be caught out with being unable to fulfil an order because your stock is already spread into several small boutiques.

MENTORING| Vauxhall Fashion Scout catches up with Harvey Nichols buyer Alison Chisholm after successful VFS Mentoring Event

The Vauxhall Fashion Scout Mentoring Event is always a blast - crammed full of information and advice for emerging designers, we bring some of the leading experts in the industry together to help support British designers.

After Monday's Sales Event, we caught up with Alison Chisolm, Harvey Nichol's Assistant Buyer Contemporary Bridge, on how she thought the event went as a member of the expert panel...

"I think it was a great success, from my point of view I felt I could really connect with the young designers and let them know what we need from them and hopefully in return they got information that they need from us, which might make them a bit more wise to what we need from them when coming to approach buyers with information."

A big thank you to Alison for being part of our panel for the evening, it was such a success- we're really looking forward to the next one!

Stay tuned to the Vauxhall Fashion Scout blog for more information on the Mentoring Event from this week, including exclusive interviews, images and insights from the night!

LONDON| Toni & Guy Magazine Interview Vauxhall Fashion Scout Director Martyn Roberts

Martyn Roberts at Vauxhall Fashion Scout, Freemason's Hall. London Fashion Week

Toni & Guy Team backstage at Vauxhall Fashion Scout

Vauxhall Fashion Scout may be an undoubtably intrical part of London Fashion Week, providing a "career springboard" for emerging designers- but without the backing and support of our fantastic sponsors, Vauxhall Fashion Scout couldn't reach the heights it has.

Toni&Guy, have been official hair sponsors for Vauxhall Fashion Scout for over a remarkable 10 seasons, and there's just no stopping this dynamic duo!
In the Spring issue of Toni&Guy magazine, Maia Adams interviews Vauxhall Fashion Scout Director Martyn Roberts, on how the company has grown from strength to strength since its humble beginnings as "just a hobby" not so long ago...

"We decided to create a hub where young designers could showcase their work and where bloggers- who were just starting to make an impact - could cover the event from our media centre. Vauxhall was looking to back new designers and I told them I'd sort something out for them. Less than a month later we staged a seven-designer show at London Fashion Week."

Martyn and the Vauxhall Fashion Scout team are now heading into it's 14th Season. Having just wrapped up another glistening season- A/W12, at London Fashion Week, Vauxhall Fashion Scout headed straight back into the fashion heavy-weight ring with the Paris Showroom, taking 23 of London's most promising designers and planting them in the centre of the Paris Fashion Week action, showcasing exactly how talented emerging London-based designers can be.

"London's renowned for it's creativity and diversity" says Martyn, "...which gives us a license to get interesting... We're constantly scouting shows and graduate collections for new designers."

And indeed we are- Vauxhall Fashion Scout has aided the careers of some of the most innovative and renown designers of the times, including William Tempest, David Koma and Hermione De Paula. All of whom have been awarded VFS's highest commendation- the prestigious Merit Award. And Robert's personal greatest achievement...?

"To see a designer we've supported going above and beyond what they thought they were capable of. Whether that's a fashion show to which hundreds of people have come to see their collection, or an exhibition where Italian Vogue has spotted their work and asked to feature it in the magazine."

With designers being hand-picked by leading fashion industry experts as highlights from both London and Paris Fashion Weeks and designers emerging to world-wide critical acclaim from under the wing of the Vauxhall Fashion Scout name, the home of new talent has definitely proved itself as a shining beacon for new London-based designers to come and show the world what they're truly made of.
