Backstage at Eudon Choi Spring Summer 2011

Backstage photography by Asia Werbel

Backstage at Eudon Choi, there seemed to radiate an element of calm. There was no mad teasing of tresses, or brushes flying over faces. The look was sleek and minimal and the mood in the air reflected this.

Make-up artist Adam de Cruz  from the acclaimed Academy of Freelance Makeup created a bare, but groomed look; models faces were dewy and youthful, and seemingly free of make up.

“The collection was inspired by just being on the beach, putting on a pair of sunglasses and doing nothing to your skin,” explained Adam.

The dewy look was achieved by an intensive skin care routine before any make up was applied. Skin was buffed, and vaseline was rubbed into model’s shoulders and lower legs.

Highlighted cheekbones gave the skin a ‘post-spa’ appearance, while curled eyelashes and brows combed upwards emulated the high-grooming of the women who inspired the looks.

Pinar Necata and her team used Toni and Guy mousses and sea-salt spray to give the hair a just-left-the-beach look. However, the styling was kept sleek and chic with the hair pulled into low ponytails. A stark centre parting emulated the sportswear minimalism of the clothing collection, and fringes were smoothed back neatly behind the ears.

As Pinar describes, “this is a very chic woman. She has been sunbathing, she has gone for lunch, and she has just slicked it back, effortlessly. It’s very expensive looking.”

Eudon Choi Spring Summer 2012

Hungry eyes lined the catwalk, as excitement for VFS’s first show got under way this morning. We spotted ELLE’s Accessory Editor Donna Wallace on the front row and behind her, keen viewers edged closer to the runway at every available opportunity. As the lights dimmed, Eudon Choi’s models made their eagerly anticipated entrance.

The first model stepped out in a white minimal tunic dress and deep red sports jacket establishing a sense of the collection. What followed carried with it a refined and modern interpretation of sportswear from the late 60’s and early 70’s. Knee grazing dresses created simple boyish silhouettes with sporadic splashes or colour, in candy pinks, saturated lilacs, and other almost sugar coated shades. However, detail presented itself in a demure manner with clean geometric block or stripes that were at times asymmetrically placed. These colourful flickers were otherwise restrained by a palette that was muted and uncomplicated.

As these classic shapes brushed past us the influences of sportswear where undeniable boxy masculine bomber jackets, sheer tank tops and leather edged gym shorts. Each familiar shape feminised by youthful and elegant touches. The fabrics gave each piece a lux finish and metallic embroidery in gold and pink reinvented references from the decades gone by. The buttery double fused Napa leathers, silk, linen, and resin coated cotton stitched side by side enhanced the beautiful structure of the coats and one-pieces. Effortless, while still rich in texture and substance.

“My key tip for my collection is declutter,” Choi told us backstage, after his gracious wave to the crowd. A little speechless and then giddy at times, he explained the influences behind his collection and the research that had gone in to forming it, “I trawled through old magazines like Vogue and wanted to rewrite late 60’s sportswear with technology”. Referencing Le Corbusier he played with classic sportswear shapes to demonstrate his own take on modernism.  “ I am so grateful to VFS they pioneered my career and gave me the platform to launch myself.”

VFS launches Graduate Showcase

Cementing their position as the go-to for emerging talent, Vauxhall Fashion Scout are proud to announce the launch of their Graduate Showcase. Featuring a hand-picked selection of some of the most exciting new talent (drawn from recently graduated students at CSM, LCF, RCA, Westminster De Montfort and Kingston Universities), twelve students presented three outfits, styled by Fashion156 founder Guy Hipwell. A continuation of the acclaimed VFS mentoring programme, the showcase allowed students to meet press, buyers, industry professionals and bloggers face-to-face. "Some of these designers are having to speak to press and buyers", commented Martyn Roberts, Vauxhall Fashion Scout founder. "As a designer you're usually behind the scenes, so this is such a great opportunity for the designers to build awareness about themselves".

The Graduate Showcase is fully supported by the BFC, and David Watts (Fashion Business Adviser and a Mentor at the British Fashion Council) was in attendance as the show opened, and was full of glowing praise for both students and exhibition. "What you're doing here is incredible", he said. "I'm just blown away". Guy Hipwell was similarly enamoured by the quality of the designers and the strength of their collections. "The Showcase was a last minute addition to the schedule, but all the designers were so easy to work with. I wanted to show the diversity of the graduates, so the pieces veer from really bright colour to much more abstract, conceptual pieces. This is just such an amazing platform for all the designers involved".

Stay tuned for individual designer profiles and interviews on the VFS blog!

We are delighted to announce that Guy Hipwell is the official stylist and curator for our new Graduate Showcase.
Guy Hipwell of Fashion156.com strives to bring young and up-coming designers into the limelight. His website Fashion156.com is what only can be described as pioneering, looking for the best in emerging design talent and giving those passionate in the field a platform on which to grow and succeed as creatives. With fashion moving into the digital age, this innovative idea of using the net to capture a global audience of ever hungry fashionistas was a sharp one. Fashion156.com was launched in 2006 and at the head of it was Guy who used his phenomenonal 20 years in the industry as a designer and stylist to aid others. Guy holds many titles at Fashion156.com from Founding Editor to Creative Director, he is a man of many diverse disciplines in which he utilises to bring new budding designers into the industry. Vauxhall Fashion Scout has the pleasure of working closely with the fashion insider on our new talent initative, The Graduate showcase.

"With so many designers graduating each year, it is becoming even more challenging for them to get their work recognised. Sadly although they may have talent, many are not equipped or have the knowledge of how they should progress with their careers and if it could be possible to launch their own label.  Initiatives such as VFS Graduate Showcase are therefore vital to garner industry interest and as importantly offer the graduates advice and support through mentoring. It really is a superb platform to get their names out there and gain objective feedback."  Guy Hipwell, Editor & Creative Director of Fashion156.com.
Vauxhall Fashion Week is gearing up for London Fashion Week and we kick off tomorrow with the launch of our Graduate Showcase!

Sponsor Treatment: Snog Sent a Frozen Present

 And the frozen treatment arrived!

Many toppings to choose

Muesli and strawberries? or... a bit of everything?

It was 16.21PM this afternoon, when we had a frozen delivery to our LFW office. Snog Pure Frozen Yoghurt brand, which it is one of our sponsors for this SS12 season, sent a truly healthy treat: some pots with Pure Frozen Yoghurt and all their toppings to pick and mix. Berries and muesli? Oreos and white chocolate starts? Or everything together?

As Fashion Week is getting close, the team was trying to look good,  so we were worried about this sweet pampering but... Snog is free from fat and sugar.

From the delivery guys, the flavor, the toppings, even the spoon, we are loving this snogging thing.

Have a look to their blog. click here.

Massive attendance! Models from nearly all the agencies came down with their portfolios, some of them  presented theirs with an I-pad! that is the future for modeling...

According to Elisa Palomino, who´s showing with us: "Ben Hur should be jealous and so all the epics from early Hollywood!" referring to the huge amount of models that attended the call.

Also, click here to see the review of the event by 1883 magazine presented by the blogger extraordinaire Lewis Taylor.
