My usual Sundays contain eating what I want, meeting friends and sleeping in between the two, but yesterday I attended the first day of Graduate Fashion Week. After soaking up the atmosphere of the stands and speaking with the enthusiastic graduates I was looking forward to the Northumbria show.
First up was Naomi New’s collection; an array of oversized jewel and mirror encrusted shoulder padded body’s finished off with a mix of hair fringing. A selection of perfect Gaga outfits, white studded leather jackets and high waisted trousers were respective of a 90’s Gianni Versace.
In contrast Hannah Casen Seawright’s Victorian inspired vintage collection looked like it was created by a designer with years of experience. An elegant silhouette of silk blouses, embroidered circle skirts, paper bag waist trousers styled with bracers, leather bags and a gorgeous black origami swan headpiece.
Julie Perry offered sharp jumpsuits and a well cut grey peg leg boiler suit, all caged in a metal mecanno style sculpture. Transformer style design in which with one pull the model could turn upside down wings into sculptured shoulders.
Textiles dominated the show with incredible techno prints designed by Ludmila Maida and bold patterns and pleats from Nathalie Murray. Faye Chamberlain was my personal favourite, providing a welcome break from the muted hues. Six vivid outfits graced the catwalk in bright kaleidoscopic graphic prints. Hips were accentuated with nipped in waist dresses and trousers covered wedged shoes exaggerating the length of the leg, all finished off with gold metallic and crystal surface decoration.
All in all a varied spectrum of mens, womenswear, textile and knitwear design has me excited for the busy week ahead. Graduate Fashion Week continues until Wednesday night with a Gala show at which the winners of the Best Menswear, Best Womenswear and the River Island £20,000 Gold Award will be announced.
