EXHIBITION| Taeseok Kang FEB'13

This season London College of Fashion graduate Taeseok Kang is showcasing the sexually orientated, innovative designs in his AW13 Collection at the Fashion Scout Exhibition space at Freemasons Hall for a second season.

What is your brand aesthetic?

My work explores the narratives of sexual human body parts and the sexual sensations that manifest from human nature. I work with the displacement of human body parts, deconstructing them and illustrating them through my designs, which range from sexually subtle to erotic and extreme.

Tell us about your inspiration for the AW13 collection:

I have reassembled sexual body parts into the designs of my bags and accessories, they are demonstrated through the shapes, functions and details. I have also taken inspiration from the art of cross-dressing, a concept which has influenced the functions of my creations; in particular the backpack which includes a hood in it’s design and the ‘garment bag’– illustrating the multi-functional nature of my designs.

How do you create the items?

They are all handcrafted using a combination of vegetarian leather and plated brass, which is used for fixtures, closures details and the earrings, brooches and clips I have designed.

What are the future plans for the label?

I aim to withhold the same concept whilst working on new shapes, I will be taking a more masculine perspective on my work working on symbols to signify male body parts. I will also be taking inspiration from my childhood memories centering around the relationship I had with my father when I was a boy.

What are your thoughts on working with Fashion Scout?

It has allowed me to network with so many people and make new connections within the fashion industry. It has also allowed me to import my own world to the public eye, providing an amazing opportunity.

EXHIBITION| Hellen van Rees

Former Fashion Scout One to Watch winner, Hellen van Rees has done nothing but impress since graduation from Central Saint Martins with her weaved, three-dimensional pieces. Exhibiting her AW13 collection between the 15th and 19th February at our Freemasons Hall, we caught up with the Dutch designer to talk about her new collection, unique aesthetic, and Susie Bubble.

What inspired the new collection?

It's a continuation of the previous one. I've added some new colours and weaving directions like weaving in three directions at once. I've been looking at modern art again but translating it more into graphic pieces with lots of contrasts with black, white and lines.

So you feel you've really found your aesthetic and it's here to stay?

Yes, I think the tweed and weaving is something I'm going to continue with. Exploring different way of doing that. I think it's something I have that nobody else has and it's really recognisable so it's something I want to keep.

Who do you design for?

That's always a very difficult question. I think I always have myself in mind, if I had more money to spend on my wardrobe!

Susie Bubble just came to see your work. What did she say?

She said she really liked my work from graduation. She looked at all of the previous pieces and the new pieces. It was very positive. She took a lot of pictures, wanted me to send my fashion film over so it's really good.

What impact has being One to Watch last season had?

It's been really good because it was my first collection since graduating and it was difficult to see how I was going to present it properly to the right audience. Ones to Watch has been really helpful in getting to a fashion stage immediately.

EXHIBITION| Anna October Feb'13

Graduating from the College of Technology and Design in 2008 and later studying Fine Art studies, Anna October launched her own brand that was recently placed in the top 10 most promising designer brands of Eastern Europe by Marie Claire (US).

The Ukranian-born designer is known for her modern, feminine and timeless designs. October presented her AW13/14 collection at Fashion Scout's Exhibition Space and spoke to us about her collection, 'Present'.

What was the inspiration behind this season’s collection?

This collection was inspired by the post-Soviet countries clichés and the tradition of giving presents. This is something that was common in these countries, they gave a lot of gold and silver, people expect to have these presents. So these clichés were really interesting to me, as I am a child of the 90s, a generation that doesn't practice these traditions.

Talk to us about the materials of your collection.

I am addicted to shimmering textiles and I was experimenting with different jacquards throughout the collection. All the materials were made especially for this collection in different productions in France.

What do you consider your signature pieces?

I like to work with feminine cuts that shape the body, and combine it with modern 'strange' fabrics to give a modern look. My signature pieces are definitely dresses, feminine dresses.

Where do you see your brand going in the future?

I see it moving forward in a conceptual way. As the brand grows and matures, I think more stockists and publications will come then.

PREVIEW| Christopher Waller Fashion Film

Ahead of his debut showcase at Fashion Scout, designer Christopher Waller releases this new fashion film in anticipation of the upcoming collection. A serene and peaceful film that takes us through waves of colour and emotion with beautiful imagery filmed by Junas Grybe and directed by Joe Hunt.
The University of East London graduate founded his first solo collection in 2010 after being shortlisted for the Graduate Fashion Week Gold Award and working with John Richmond.
His pieces take on classic shapes and staple wardrobe must haves using new textures that effortlessly reinvent them into his own aesthetic. Colour blocking and graphic prints on luxurious fabrics create the brand identity of urban cool and modernity. The film features a glimpse of the new collection’s digital prints and silk fabrics that will be on show at the Fashion Scout exhibition space from Friday 15th to Tuesday 19th February.
