Machine-A: Boutique Review

Never ones to resist the chance for a nose, the Soho-based shop, Machine-A, is one fashion hotspot we’ve been eyeballing for ages. Housing a shed-load of Fashion Scout designers, Fiona Anderson reviews this gem of a store.

‘It takes 2 or 3 people to be in here until customers have the confidence to come in’. Staring, slack jawed, at the pig’s head dangling in the front window, I was beginning to see the shop assistant’s point. Nestled amongst the fabric shops and cafes of Soho's Berwick Street, Machine-A serves as an achingly cool utopia for all things edgy and alternative and, frankly, I was beginning to wonder if my Topshop get-up would cut the mustard. Not knowing whether to expect an S&M sex dungeon, or a buttock-clenchingly pretentious Hoxton-esque haunt, I was pleasantly surprised to be greeted by a calm, airy haven with stripped floors and monochrome walls. Quiet, but not silent, and cluttered, but not overwhelming, each rail heaved with an array of pieces, some avant-garde, some theatrical, some urban and some minimal, but each utterly stylish and dripping with London cool.

Rubber catsuits hung from walls, a wooden dresser, bedecked with neatly placed knick knacks, sat snugly behind the till, and electro beats hummed through the speakers, as i instantly relaxed, and began frantically pawing at jackets, dresses and t-shirts. ‘People love Gemma Slack, we sell a lot of her stuff’, the punky-looking, and very accommodating, shop assistant, Millie Cockton, says, deftly managing me, three other nagging customers, and a ringing phone, without so much as a sigh of irritation. There are certainly a lot of wearable pieces at Machine-A, not just by Slack, but also Komakino, and House of Blueeyes, coupled with more showy pieces like a Rachel Freire bolero and that lusciously frilled, red and blue jacket from Ada Zanditon that had us all weak at the knees back in September. Cheeky Piers Atkinson headpieces and cute, GaGa-esqe accessories peep out from every nook, against the backdrop of comic strip wallpaper, making the store feel far more than just an opportunity to max out your credit card, but a brilliant display of the freshest design talent.

Machine-A is selective, exclusive, and undeniably high fashion, combining just the right mix of the directional, and the functional. Never again shall I judge a store by its window, this high street girl has been well and truly converted.

Gemma Slack: Up Close and Personal

The ruffed up, bouffant hair and wide-eyed, elfin features. The beautiful, veil-like chains strung across the cheeks and attached to warrior-style, metal plates, draping delicately from perfectly sculpted shoulders. The fluffy, spiky elbowed jumper, the asymmetric biker jacket. Oh, we thought these shots of Gemma Slack’s AW10 collection from gagadaily.com were just so smokin’ hot, we had to share them with you. Enjoy.

F-Tape Auction: Artwork by Gemma Slack and Dean Quinn

Artwork by Dean Quinn

Artwork by Gemma Slack

The fabulous designers, Gemma Slack and Dean Quinn, have pushed their sketch pads aside, dusted off their easels and gone all high brow on us as part of an arty project run by F-Tape. Collaborating with the equally fabulous Volt magazine and Swarovski CRYSTALLIZED, Hannah Marshall, Craig Lawrence, Holly Fulton, Katie Eary, Fred Butler and Manjit Deu also join Slack and Quinn in the project, whereby each designer has customised an oversized, uber chic cover of the much loved magazine, Volt, in their signature aesthetic.

Be it minimal and modern, embellished up to the gills, or manipulated and moulded into an entirely new image, the result is a stunning array of crystal encrusted, super sparkly, one off art pieces, and the good news is you can now get your mitts of them! The exquisite art works are now being auctioned live on F-Tape, giving you the chance to keep a piece of your favourite, most innovative designer up on your wall.

The auction ends of Monday, so let the frenzied, fashion-loving, bidding wars begin!

Jasper Garvida: Up Close and Personal

Check out these detail shots from Jasper Garvida’s show, found on the style blog, Park and Cube. We especially loved the uber chunky, deliciously ostentatious, shiny, gold zip pulls, with Jasper's name proudly emblazoned across them. In a time when the label-less, American Apparel aesthetic is top banana, this wonderful display of pure, unapologetic luxe was utterly, absolutely fabulously, gorgeous.  See more from the show here.

Desperate Housewives star wears Sado

Maiara Walsh, the super stunning, wayward teen from Desperate Housewives, certainly wasn’t playing the rebellious adolescent card at the Ernest Borgnine pre-Oscar party last week. Opting for a sleek, simple and oh-so-pretty Sado number in antique cream hues, it was the perfect choice for the gorgeous young star. Oozing easy glamour and relaxed sexiness in a slouchy, off the shoulder cut and statement necklace, Walsh clearly has an eye for chilled out, sun-kissed style. Pure perfection.

Suzy Amis Cameron Wears Prophetik at the Global Green pre-Oscar party

Prophetik, who rocked the Freemasons’ Hall during Fashion Week with their live band, have again found themselves in the spotlight. At this year’s Global Green 7th annual pre-Oscar party, held on the 3rd March, the ethically minded Suzy Amis Cameron (wife of Avatar director James Cameron) chose to wear a stunning creation by the eco-label, Prophetik. Accompanied by her husband, Suzy was there to promote her campaign and competition, Red Carpet Green Dress, a charitable organisation which promotes sustainable design.

The black, silk, backless dress with bronze lining was straight off the AW 10 catwalk and the perfect choice for such a high glamour event, showing that environmentally friendly fashion is stylish, edgy and fabulous!
