David Koma

Architectural, sculpted, and body conscious – Georgian born David Koma, Vauxhall Fashion Scout’s Merit Award winner this season, presented a stand-out collection to the assembled press and buyers this evening.

Koma has already notched up several awards in his fledgling career – since graduating from the Central Saint Martins MA in 2007 he won the Womenswear Design Award for the class of 2007, and scooped the Harrod’s Design Award this year.

As soon as the first outfit hit the catwalk it was clear to see why – in a short time he has developed a strong signature style that juxtaposes hard embellished elements (for spring / summer 10 ceramic detailing inspired by the sculptures of Niki de Saint Phalle in Barcelona’s Tarot Garden) with overtly sexual cuts to create a look that is edgy yet feminine. Cut away panels served only to further reinforce the contrast of the inorganic materials with the soft, organic flesh beneath. Dresses and separates executed in a minimal palette of black and white acted as a canvas for the coloured adornments.

Luxurious materials such as leather and silk were married with easy to wear jersey and cotton, and finished with beautiful attention to detail. The covetable collection shone with promise and creativity. I for one will be popping into stockist Browns Focus if only to see his Autumn / Winter collection up close.
