Fashion Illustration: Interview with our SS16 Illustrator, Scott W Mason

We're between seasons, but there's a definite air of anticipation in the office. Applications for AW16 closed last week and with a growing collection of upcoming talent to choose from, the selection process for next season’s designers is underway.

We caught up with our SS16 in-house illustrator, Scott W Mason to gain some insight into the things he looks out for in a collection and his personal highlights of SS16. With a degree in Fashion Photography from Falmouth University, Scott is lead by a strong, clean aesthetic within collections. ‘My personal favourites from SS16 Merit Award Winner, Roberts | Wood and [AW15 Merit Award Winner] James Kelly. They both had such exciting structures and shapes to draw, as well as minimal use of colour which I have a soft spot for.

As well as presenting emerging designers to the fashion industry last season, Fashion Scout also showed cult icon, fashion designer and musician Pam Hogg's SS16 collection, ‘I loved Pam Hogg’s collection, she’s always a huge Fashion Scout highlight and [this season's] collection 'Lawless' really showed her punk personality in full force.

As the largest off-schedule event during London Fashion Week, Fashion Scout provides illustrators like Scott with the perfect place to expand their fashion illustration portfolio. He explains his technique: ‘I scribble down my responses live from the catwalk, focusing on the shape of a garment- the flow of the fabric or a specific pattern.’ It takes talent and technique to draw live fashion, capturing a garment's movement and essence all while working amongst the reams of industry guests at a show can be tough. ‘There’s a lot of pressure [drawing live on] the catwalk, it’s tougher to work around prying eyes, I want to make sure every illustration is perfect.’

With only a few seconds to draw his response, Scott has to choose carefully when selecting which look from a designer he wants to focus on: ‘I tend to go for shape mainly, there isn't a whole lot of colour in my illustrations so I'm always drawn (pardon the pun) to lines and shape. For example with my Apu Jan illustration, the shape of the dress was beautiful to me, with the vertical lines of the top with the horizontal drape of the waist with it then kicking right out with the flowing fabric, drawing those shapes and lines excites me far more in an illustration than any print or rainbow of colours.’

SS16 was Scott’s debut as Fashion Scout’s in-house Illustrator, but he has illustrated fashion for several years, ‘embarrassingly it was America’s Next Top Model that inspired me to get into fashion. I couldn’t afford to do photo shoots, so drawing was my only option.’ Showcasing his illustrations on Instagram, Scott has built up a large and engaged following over the past few years and is making a name for himself as one of London’s great new talents.

Fashion Scout gives established and  upcoming talent a spotlight to showcase their work in, and as well as launching many designers, this past season gave Scott the support to take the next step in his own career. ‘It was a great experience to work within a group of other creatives and working towards a daily deadline always pushes you to your limits.’ Since working with Fashion Scout in September 2015, Scott has started working at bridal footwear boutique and is also selling originals and limited copies of his SS16 artwork.

Scott looks forward to the AW16 season in February 2016, ‘I have two soft spots: one is staggered hemlines (they're so fun to draw, much like in James Kelly's collection), and I absolutely adore anything that has a pop or illustration-type look to it like Typical Freaks collection in Ones To Watch, so fingers crossed for something similar next season.’

With selections for next season currently underway we’re sure AW16 will provide plenty of illustration inspiration.

SS16 Trends from Niro Wang and Apu Jan

Apu Jan’s collection alluded to key fashions of the 60’s with her use of high collars and slashed necklines, whilst keeping her to her uniform of chic shapes and clean cuts.

A video posted by Fashion Scout (@fashionscoutlondon) on

Graphic prints were a key element for both Apu Jan and Niro Wang. Where Jan showcased turquoise florals, candy pinks and all over brights, Wang presented us with stories of field workers, tools in cerulean blue, neon oranges and mustard yellows.

Linen was also flaunted in both designers’ Spring Summer looks. We saw black linen tailored trouser suits with inverted lapels at Apu Jan -masculine in shape and style, but soft and feminine in texture. Wang exhibited oversized white jumpsuits complete with drawstring waists.

Fine knits were incorporated into Niro Wang's collection, while Apu Jan flaunted her complex use of chunky knits and use of differing techniques, such as wide slip stitch, eyelet herringbone and jumbo cable.

What were your favourite elements of each designers collections?

COLLECTION | Apu Jan

Inspired by an imaginary forest, the new collection of Apu Jan, “Deep into the woods” was followed by the music, which combining electronic sounds, vocals, bass, guitar and violin created the perfect atmosphere of the forest.

The oriental looks walked down the catwalk looking like paintings; the modern digital prints, showing a series of delicate creatures, created a sense of nostalgia and a dreamy state, telling stories that Jan perfectly portrayed through the uses of various hand knitting and machine knitting techniques.

The elegant was combined perfectly with the casual style and bright blue tones were mixed with greyscale. Thick loose jumpers alternated with tight clean pencil skirts while the fabrics, the colors and the shapes created an interesting contrast between each other.

Again Apu Jan created a perfect dreamy scene, an escape for everyone who are constantly attached to the nostalgia of fantasy worlds.

COLLECTION| Apu Jan SS15

Sending down the runway models dressed in seismic shades of blue, designer Apu Jan showed modern knitwear juxtaposed with light, flowing fabrics. Oscillating between darker and brighter shades of blue, as well as heavy and light materials, the designer brought a twist to summery silhouettes without losing his identity of detailed cuts and intricate prints.

The designer played with the weight of fabrics, as he mixed heavy knitwear with summery fabrics that swayed along with the movement of the models, and structured blazers and skirts layered with transparent fabrics. Garments featured knitted pixelated patterns and illustrations, showing scenes that crossed the boundaries between deep sea and in the summery skies in an almost impressionist manner. A few pieces in shades of blue, which did not feature the prints as their standout feature, showed heavy knitted braids detailing summery dresses, as well as the intricate prints featured in the accessories.

In terms of silhouette, Jan maintained a certain traditional approach, working with a balance between feminine, carefree dresses and structured coats and skirts, but gave these shapes a twist through the extreme attention to detail. Featuring an envelope technique in the coats and using layered, origami-like high up necklines, he gave a sophisticated, yet modern look to the traditional cut. Long, flowing summer dresses featured the designer’s signature slits, which allowed movement and gave the finishing touches to a standout collection.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT SS15| Apu Jan

Apu Jan will be showing with Fashion Scout for the fourth consecutive season this month, having previously shown his ‘Petroleum’, ‘The Signal’ and ‘Turbulence’ collections to critical acclaim.

Taiwanese Apu Jan, now based in London, graduated from the Royal College of Art with an MA in Fashion Womenswear, specialising in knitwear. For Jan, knitwear provides an opportunity to create a whole new world using just thread without the need for additional materials, a world in which imagination meets sophistication and history takes a flight of fancy.

Commended by the likes of Vogue, Wallpaper* and i-D, traditional oriental myths receive a modern interpretation, realised in fluid silhouettes, Eastern-inspired beauty looks and a restrained colour palette with one bold accent hue. Wearable separates emblazoned with modern prints by Ying Wu make for commercial collections, a touch of the avant-garde present in deep v necks, voluminous collars and peekaboo millinery.

Speaking about his childhood, Jan states that he always loves creativity, arts and crafts, reading books and watching films in particular, but can’t say that he always saw his career path lie in design. But a BA in Textile Design at Fu Jen University brought out an undeniable talent for turning mythical inspirations into fringed, frilled and draped knitwear of the most elegant kind. ‘There are so many stories I would like to develop into clothing; some of them have been in my mind for a while…. Once the story has matured I will start to design clothes and let them speak’.

Apu Jan will take to the Fashion Scout catwalk on Sunday 14th at 11:30am.
