Fashion Illustration: Interview with our SS16 Illustrator, Scott W Mason

We're between seasons, but there's a definite air of anticipation in the office. Applications for AW16 closed last week and with a growing collection of upcoming talent to choose from, the selection process for next season’s designers is underway.

We caught up with our SS16 in-house illustrator, Scott W Mason to gain some insight into the things he looks out for in a collection and his personal highlights of SS16. With a degree in Fashion Photography from Falmouth University, Scott is lead by a strong, clean aesthetic within collections. ‘My personal favourites from SS16 Merit Award Winner, Roberts | Wood and [AW15 Merit Award Winner] James Kelly. They both had such exciting structures and shapes to draw, as well as minimal use of colour which I have a soft spot for.

As well as presenting emerging designers to the fashion industry last season, Fashion Scout also showed cult icon, fashion designer and musician Pam Hogg's SS16 collection, ‘I loved Pam Hogg’s collection, she’s always a huge Fashion Scout highlight and [this season's] collection 'Lawless' really showed her punk personality in full force.

As the largest off-schedule event during London Fashion Week, Fashion Scout provides illustrators like Scott with the perfect place to expand their fashion illustration portfolio. He explains his technique: ‘I scribble down my responses live from the catwalk, focusing on the shape of a garment- the flow of the fabric or a specific pattern.’ It takes talent and technique to draw live fashion, capturing a garment's movement and essence all while working amongst the reams of industry guests at a show can be tough. ‘There’s a lot of pressure [drawing live on] the catwalk, it’s tougher to work around prying eyes, I want to make sure every illustration is perfect.’

With only a few seconds to draw his response, Scott has to choose carefully when selecting which look from a designer he wants to focus on: ‘I tend to go for shape mainly, there isn't a whole lot of colour in my illustrations so I'm always drawn (pardon the pun) to lines and shape. For example with my Apu Jan illustration, the shape of the dress was beautiful to me, with the vertical lines of the top with the horizontal drape of the waist with it then kicking right out with the flowing fabric, drawing those shapes and lines excites me far more in an illustration than any print or rainbow of colours.’

SS16 was Scott’s debut as Fashion Scout’s in-house Illustrator, but he has illustrated fashion for several years, ‘embarrassingly it was America’s Next Top Model that inspired me to get into fashion. I couldn’t afford to do photo shoots, so drawing was my only option.’ Showcasing his illustrations on Instagram, Scott has built up a large and engaged following over the past few years and is making a name for himself as one of London’s great new talents.

Fashion Scout gives established and  upcoming talent a spotlight to showcase their work in, and as well as launching many designers, this past season gave Scott the support to take the next step in his own career. ‘It was a great experience to work within a group of other creatives and working towards a daily deadline always pushes you to your limits.’ Since working with Fashion Scout in September 2015, Scott has started working at bridal footwear boutique and is also selling originals and limited copies of his SS16 artwork.

Scott looks forward to the AW16 season in February 2016, ‘I have two soft spots: one is staggered hemlines (they're so fun to draw, much like in James Kelly's collection), and I absolutely adore anything that has a pop or illustration-type look to it like Typical Freaks collection in Ones To Watch, so fingers crossed for something similar next season.’

With selections for next season currently underway we’re sure AW16 will provide plenty of illustration inspiration.

At Fashion Scout The Body Shop and label.m for Tony&Guy created a breathtaking array of looks. It seems braids of all kinds will be a dominant trend for next season, as seen at Angel Chen, Niro Wang and several other shows.

#FROW at Fashion Scout SS16

While we mainly attend catwalk shows to keep up with the latest colours, prints and cuts, sometimes it's fun to take a look at who sits on the infamous FROW. These VIPs and industry big wigs are often stylish from head to toe and always fun to glance at in between the models' walks. Here at Fashion Scout, we are excited for the fashion both on and off the catwalk.

Sitting FROW at the Judy Wu show was the young 'Maleficent' actress, Isobelle Molloy.
Girlband, Stooshe, also sat FROW for the Judy Wu 'Feminine Strength' show. The girls all wore Judy's monochrome designs.
Lewis-Duncan Weedon at the Maral Yazarloo Show
Celebrity Ambassador for the Princes Trust, stylist and writer, Lewis-Duncan Weedon, spent a lot of London Fashion Week on the front row. He looked every bit the fashionista in this McQueen print scarf.

Bold, beautiful and big hair featured FROW during The House of Middle East & Asia with Maral Yazarloo catwalk. Less is definitely not more.

LZ7 band member, Lindz West attended Rohmir, Judy Wu and Maral Yazarloo.

Pam Hogg's hotly anticipated collection, Lawless, packed out the Freemasons' Hall Vestibule. The fashion-forward took their coveted seats on the FROW, as the rest of the world squeezed into every bit of available space behind them.

Sunglasses indoors is only acceptable during London Fashion Week, here's David Motta styling brooch headwear.

Made in Chelsea star and Kimberly London swimwear designer, Kimberly Garner, was spotted at various shows throughout the weekend, including Pam Hogg and Judy Wu. We've had quite a few Made in Chelsea stars leave their borough for this week's event.

Musician Jay Mehler and Lee Starky (Ringo Starr's daughter) were siting FROW at the Pam Hogg show.

Fashion Scout is proud to play host to some of the most influential, eccentric and chic people in the industry at our events. Along with the designer's PR, we provide our established designers with the guests they expect and our fledgling designers with an audience who can enable their exposure.

Fashion Scout for London Fashion Week runs from 18th-22nd 2015 at the Freemasons' Hall, WC2B 5AZ

Pam Hogg: LAWLESS SS16's Modern Renegade

Pam Hogg: Give a man a gun and he'll rob a bank, give a man a bank and he'll rob the world.

No doubt one of the seasonal highlights in the Fashion Scout schedule was last nights showcase of Pam Hogg’s SS16 collection. Entitled 'Lawless' with the tag line 'Give a man a gun and he'll rob a bank, give a man and a bank and he'll rob the world.' Pam planted the audience in the Wild West as she offered a series of powerful looks perfect for the modern renegade.

Models (every bit as fierce as Pam herself) walked with defiant stares, wearing sandy country prints and peachy tassels. Duster coats, wide sweeping skirts and coordinated suits each displaying contrasting metallic leather lapels embellished with a 'H' motif. Her country/western undertones continued with high tasseled boots and leather chaps for the 21st century cowboy.

Pam continues to stray from convention with her eccentric studding. A stand out look was an off-white leather bikini covered in round studs and metallic spikes, encompassing Pam's rebellious character. A series of trans-seasonal coats continued this trend with a stone leather trench covered in large military style studs. Neutrals were contrasted against bright desert-toned leathers fit for rock royalty.

Anti-establishment shone through her collection as feminine shapes were constructed with tough leathers, metal embellishments and stiff collars, a power outfit for the brave. As Dick Dale's 'Miserlou' blasted through the speakers, Pam's loyal rock-royalty front row began to dance, the unconventional catwalk atmosphere reflecting the playful unruliness of the collection on all accounts.

It wouldn't be a Pam Hogg collection without her trademark catsuits and the spandex clad models pounded the catwalk in acid bright creations. Daring cutouts were highlighted with metallic accents and garnished with tassels that sashayed with movement. Accessories were consistent throughout the designs, with oversized berets and bandit style scarves tied around the models wrists.

Pam Hogg with her models
As the collection closed, Pam Hogg took to the catwalk to accept her well deserved applause. Front row guests including Jamie Winstone, Lee Starkey and Jay Mehler congratulated a stand out collection highlighting Pam's rock 'n' roll roots. With bold trans-seasonal outerwear and a fierce aesthetic, Pam confirmed that she can create both dramatic and wearable pieces. Her style continues to progress but her brand identity remains as it always has been - clothes for leaders and not for followers.

COLLECTION | Pam Hogg

In true outlandish Pam Hogg style, creating an electric sensation of excitement, as the audience flusters in anticipation, a musical tribute to Steve Strange opens the show, leading on to hysterical howling and references to little red riding hood in an malevolent wood.
Alternative models of differing heights and genders cascade down the run way clad in eccentric headpieces, eye patches, tattoos and gold gloves. Hand applique embroidery of flames and slogans ‘diamond dogs and demons’, studs and pastel ribbons, cover the PVC leathers, velour, sheer body suits and foil capes reinforce Pam’s concept of a twisted fairy-tale seamlessly.

Though original and ingenious the collection captures reminisce of Pam’s Rock’N’Roll past, reflecting the idea of liberation, a time of extremity, optimising British culture at its best.
Recapturing the feeling of lack of restrictions Pam’s quirky designs, complimented by sinister eye-makeup, backcombed hair and giant leather heels, show the ingenious icon as a historically prominent designer screaming a momentous message to the masses.
