NEWS| Fashion Scout designers Shao Yen and Heohwan Simulation in Tank Magazine

This week has seen Tank magazine highlight two Fashion Scout designers in their ‘Power Four’ of emerging international designers article; more specifically, Shao Yen and Heohwan Simulation.

Disclosing that Shao Yen never planned to become a knitwear designer, the article explains how Shao initially directed his talent toward jewellery design; before taking a place on the Central St Martin knitwear programme –  a movement which proved a vehicle for experimentation. The article goes on to discuss Shao’s brand aesthetic of experimental spirit, which is accessible to many people; his most recent collection inspired by Catalan artist Joan Miro and Giuseppe Castiglione’s portraits of the Chinese Emperor Qianlong, mirrors this, combining wearable clothing and eccentricity.

Alongside Shao, RCA graduate and Fashion Scout Merit Award and ‘One’s to Watch’ designer, Heohwan Simulation, is also deemed an emerging designer destined for big things. The article places emphasis on Hwan Heo’s determination, the philosophical and concept based aesthetic of his brand; and his “The decade Project”, a ten year concept he is undertaking inspired by his reading of fashion’s history.

Both Fashion Scout designers are featured alongside British, Danish Duo Trager Delaney and London launched label Ostwald Helgason.

To to be able to show my collection to a wider, international audience and to receive their feedback.

What the main inspirations of your latest collection are?
This collection is inspired by early surrealist films, in particular 'Un Chien Andalou' by Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali. I tried to combine various fashion genres into one big montage.

What you hope to gain from Paris this season?
I have been participating in the Fashion Scout Showroom for a few seasons now, I hope more and more people will see how I develop my brand and hopefully secure more stockists.

POSTCARD FROM PARIS| Shao Yen

Tawaiinese born yet London based designer Shao Yen returned to showcase his Spring/Summer 2013 collection exclusively with Vauxhall Fashion Scout at our Paris Showrooms. His sixth collection returns to some of the forms used in his masters collection whilst retaining the usage of mixed materials which his collections are recognised for. We caught up with Shao Yen Chen on the penultimate day of showcasing his S/S13 collection.

1. What has been the initial response been to your S/S 13 collection?
I chose to use quite strong and bright colour this season so that's what caught people's attention first as well as the interesting mixture of textures.

2. Is there a favourite piece/ look form the collection/ a look that you feel encapsulates your aesthetic?
The raffia sweatshirt top and pencil skirt reminds me of my MA collection. The look is much more wearable but the combination of fabrics is still interesting and playful.

3. What is the importance of showcasing your collection in Paris?
I aim to develop my brand and expand more stockists. It's a good opportunity to for me to meet buyers and press people as well as receiving feedback.

4. As a platform, what support has VFS provided you with this season that you are most grateful for?
VFS has always been very supportive and understands what young designers need. I really like the space this season.

5. What will you be doing in Paris, outside of VFS showroom-making the most of the surrounding city, or taking much deserved respite from the pace of recent weeks?
I don't have much opportunity to go out since I need to be in the showroom all day but I do enjoy walking from my flat to the showroom and looking at the people and shop windows along the way.

COLLECTION| Shao Yen AW12

After battling our way through the adoring crowds at the Shao Yen installation at Freemason’s Hall, Vauxhall Fashion Scout managed to appreciate for ourselves the effortless beauty that exuded from her work.  Emanating modernism and a contemporarily simple aesthetic, Shao Yen’s collection was the perfect antidote to the bustling space.
In electric hues of blue and orange, the collection was as dramatic as it was minimalist.  Introducing ‘street’ twists, such as caps, to high fashion garments, Shao Yen succeeded in creating a collection that was both classically skillful and excitingly fresh.
