Red and yellow and pink and green, purple and orange and blue… Mattijs van Bergen opened Vauxhall Fashion Scout with an electric tribute to the colours of the rainbow. From deep turquoise, royal blue and golden yellow to muted pink, sage green and soft grey, an eclectic mix of drapery, tailored skirts and pointed shoulders came down the catwalk. Bouncy skirts in candy colours accompanied shimmering pleating straight from the disco, finished with golden embellishments in the form of over-sized jewellery.
The Central Saint Martins graduate’s eccentricity didn’t stop there. Whether it was the checks, the stripes, or the use of frill and flounce, there was plenty for the eye to see. And as the nursery rhyme says: ‘The sky is black, the clouds are white, and it’s raining too’. But we know that Mattijs van Bergen can sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow too… Louise Hemmings
