Backstage at Fashion Scout: Day One

Exploring the upcoming hair and makeup trends for SS16, Fashion Scout headed backstage to the first shows of the day, Jamie Wei Huang, Angel Chen and Gyo Yuni Kimchoe. With a plethora of emerging beauty trends, beauty sponsors The Body Shop and Toni&Guy created innovative looks to compliment each of the designers' collections.

Jamie Wei Huang and Angel Chen showcased the standout hair trend for SS16, braids. Angel Chen's look kept hair back of the face and textured using label.m Sea Salt Spray, with models wearing intricate braids individually styled to flatter their faces natural contour. Strands of hair were undone to reflect the rebelliousness of the younger generation in the late 1960's USA. Continuing the braided trend, Jamie Wei Huang used two intertwined fishtail plaits created with messy textures for a natural look.

Gyo Yuni Kimchoe created a similarly natural tousled look with a rockabilly inspired twist using label.m Volume Mouse to construct a square quiff. The volumised front of the style lead into a sleek ponytail, emphasisng that updos are in for SS16.

Makeup looks appeared to showcase all or nothing, with Gyo Yuni Kimchoe and Angel Chen displaying bold, rebellious models opposing Jamie Wei Huang's raw, natural look.

Gyo Yuni Kimchoe used The Body Shop Honey Bronze to create a sunkissed base with the Shimmer Block in bronze highlighting the models' features. Eyebrows were filled in with dark mascara with contrasting red and green eyeshadow above the brow line to hint to Native American connotations. Angel Chen also displayed strong brows using transferrable barbed wire tattoos to create a defiant look. Over a matte bronze base, models were adorned with personal transferable tattoos and faux facial piercings, rejecting conformity.

Exhibiting a raw, youthful look, Jamie Wei Huang showcased the SS16 bare faced trend, with sunkissed models adorned with a base of The Body Shop Moisture it and Colour Crush eyeshadow in coconut. The model's flushed appearance was accentuated with a touch of blush to their cheeks.
With contrasting makeup trends and an exciting insight into SS16's updos, Fashion Scout can't wait to see what the talented teams at The Body Shop and label.m Toni&Guy create over the coming days.

INTERVIEW| Lan Nguyen-Grealis, Head Make-Up Artist at The Body Shop

Nestled behind the show are those who create, enhance and essentially complete a work of art. Through the blistering heat of what we call the backstage we met a team of dedicated Body Shop artists who continue to create the faultless finishing touches to a collection. Today we met with Lan, head of makeup, to discuss the Merit Award Show.

She spoke to us about key SS15 makeup trends, the looks for the show and the work behind the final look.

What are the looks based on for The Merit Award show today?

The looks for this season are based on military, camouflage, gardening - it's about being strong and bold, quite confident.

Can you explain the inspiration?

The designer's inspiration was quite strange, it was based on weeds and gardens- "this is what you wear when you're in the garden," camouflage. It has some sort of bearing with the war as well and what's happening around us. It's a whole military, anti-war combination. Colours, the meanings and all that texture.

What are the key looks for the show?

When we originally tested the makeup look, they had loads of ideas for camouflage makeup. We thought there was a bit too much 'anti-war' style, so to counter balance that we went for blocks on the eyes- keeping the look quite androgynous and quite military. The difference however is the different tones of colours, there's an emerald green, a dark metallic grey and a copper- three different versions that work really well with the collection.

What are the key trends you've noticed overall for the SS15 season?

For spring summer trends I've seen glosses and lots of beautiful skin with highlighting. It's not so much a makeup look that will trend, but more of a statement look. It's really nice to see that there's a bit more colour- your oranges, pastels, your earthy tones and the vibrant colours like hot pink. They've been quite fun looks, I think they've had quite young streak. All the looks are quite attainable and wearable. You can really work with them.

How important is it the work with the designer before the season starts - in terms of thought process, bouncing your idea off theirs etc.?

Our process starts weeks before the show, we reference our ideas and test the looks. I usually prepare a few different versions of what I think should work on a beauty level and we combine it together to what they want. Eventually the whole team on a test day decide on the final looks.

Be sure to check back for the Merit Award winner Gyo Yuni Kimchoe's catwalk report after their show today at 12.30 in The Gallery.

NEWS| Body Shop at Fashion Scout London

Back for another season with Fashion Scout, longtime make-up and manicure sponsors The Body Shop talk nude nails, strong brows and Instagram-ready skin as their go to beauty looks both on and off catwalk. Offering complimentary mini-makeovers and manicures to guests, Jasmin Keers from The Body Shop Newcastle and celebrity nail artist Glenis Baptiste use new-season Body Shop launches to offer a taste of upcoming catwalk looks.

Keers cites a contoured face and wash of blue or purple on eyelids as this season’s most referenced look, as well as a bold lip for added drama. In terms of beauty hangovers from AW14, strong brows are still going strong; ‘full brows will always be on trend,’ she tells us, while graphic eyeliner continues with a modern update. Perfectly winged herself, The Body Shop are well-placed to provide the tools, tips and tricks to a flawless liquid eye look.

New products being used include Instablur primer for both skin and eyes, creating a photo-perfect finish to your daily make-up, as well as the newly released Colour Crush range for lips, eyes and nails. Juicy brights are joined by sleek dark hues, taking you from season to season.

Nail artist Glenis Baptiste praises nail art’s love of ‘anything goes’, allowing her to choose a different Colour Crush shade for each nail to show off all the great colours out there. Nail transfers, dots, stripes and marbling prove nail art is still a strong trend, but nudes are experiencing a resurgence on the catwalk - especially at Fashion Scout SS15. Colour Crush nudes are more vibrant and suit a variety of skin tones, unlike in previous years.

Glenis believes that younger designers bring more flair to fashion, especially in terms of their inventive and experimental beauty looks. Talking about Fashion Scout as a platform for these emerging talents, Glenis believes Fashion Scout is an absolutely fantastic platform; ‘you can’t ask for anything more to launch your brand on, or get your name out there’.

SPONSOR| The Body Shop Stand at Fashion Scout London AW14

As part of Body Shop sponsoring Fashion Scout this season, we were thrilled to have two make-up stands located in the Media Lounge for guests to engage with throughout the week. Make-up artists chatted with guests whilst they reviewed the popular products for the season and makeovers took place daily. We chatted with Head of PR, Zoe Cook for Body Shop earlier today who shared her thoughts on the success of Body Shop this season at Fashion Scout.

What’s The Body Shop stand all about?
The Body Shop stand is all about showcasing our fabulous make-up collection, which is used on the models backstage, and encouraging Fashion Scout guests to have a makeover by one of our store make-up artists and try the products for themselves. The reaction to the Colour Crush™ Eyes and Lips ranges has been amazing, as has the All-In-BB Creams and primers. Guests have been delighted with the colour intensity and pay-off and the results that can be achieved.

What’s it like it being back for another season?
Being back at Fashion Scout London is fantastic; it’s a partnership that celebrates and supports new talent - for The Body Shop that takes place backstage with a talented team of make-up artists headed up by Lan Nguyen-Grealis. It’s wonderful to see their creativity come to life and the stunning looks produced to complement the designers’ collections.

How has the response been?
The response to The Body Shop Make-up collection has been amazing. Guests have been bowled over by the looks that head make-up artist Lan Nguyen-Grealis and her team have created for the shows, as well as the makeovers that have been taking place by our stand. The latter has been hugely popular and extremely busy with queues over the first three days.
