Fashion Shenzhen is the definitive platform for China’s budding new designers. This season at VFS’s London Fashion Week they introduce two designers to the UK.
First to hit the runway was Aum. Stimulated by Buddhist ethos, the Spring/Summer 13 collection takes the concepts of simplicity of mind and balance to inspire their pieces. Soft jersey and lightweight linens were used to construct garments. Draping was used to create a relaxed silhouette, coinciding with the relaxed, loosely plaited hair. The colour palette was calm and monastic using brown, natural, white and red tones. Creative director, Michelle Shimin Yu illustrated the theory of formlessness in her collection by using asymmetric hems and sleeves to rouse notions of fluidity. Raffia hats sat neatly on the heads of models, whilst hessian flatform shoes completed the look.
Second to show was Jixiangzhai or ‘Mascot’. The show opened with a beautiful film depicting the Chinese fashion industry. This Chinese theme was maintained throughout the show through the inclusion of traditional oriental shapes and materials. Bright turquoise, pink and yellow silks were embroidered with traditional Chinese flowers and dragons. The collection radiated elegance through dignified high necklines, feminine waistbands and tiny buttons running down dresses. Subtle flashes off flesh were exposed through off the shoulder dresses with stunning open backs.
