As
the lights dimmed and pressure mounted before the first model emerged for the
Pam Hogg AW14 show, a spotlight lit up a neon clad protester holding a placard
that read “This is a dedication to The Pussy Riot”.
Known
for speaking her mind, Hogg had something to say this season and boy did she
let us all know. The
designer’s first model emerged in a neon unitard and multi-coloured headpiece
which set the tone for what was to come. Bold, brave and eccentric, Hogg’s
collection embodied the fiery spirit of the designer from beginning to end.
The
unitard dominated the show in various styles, textures and colour palettes.
Male and female models glided extra-terrestrially down the catwalk in this Hogg
staple in gravity defying space boots. Continuing
with a theme of surrealism the models donned cotton candy style headpieces in
sugary pinks and blues.
Hogg
obliterated he notion of gender profiling and conventional beauty ideals with
her assembly of multifarious models who varied in race, gender, ethnicity size
and shape.
Hogg’s
showstoppers came in the form of gowns that combined a Bow Peep and Marie
Antoinette aesthetic but inevitably with a punky twist. A gold lame full-skirted number certainly
turned a few heads while a sheer, bridal-style unitard with Adam and Eve style
modesty coverings garnered a few cheers.
Always
one to finish on a high, Hogg finished the show with a bridal Bow-Peep style
ensemble including exaggerated bonnet, and a simple sheer scarf draped over the
model’s breasts. As
the lights dimmed once more, the crowd let out a universal cheer and the
designer dressed in a baby blue velour unitard emblazoned with slogans ‘Courage’
and ‘Pussy Riot Rule’, emerged to a well-deserved standing ovation. Hogg’s
show was as other-worldly and whimsical as could only be expected from
fashion’s rock goddess.
