COLLECTION| Portugal Fashion AW14

Fashion Scout's showcase of Portugal Fashion featured two catwalks from native Portuguese designers Daniela Barros and Joao Melo Costa.

Daniela Barros opened the catwalk shows with androgynous lines, geometric prints and oversized coats. Barros gave us a lesson in geometry as her microscopic print popped in vibrant cobalt blue against black and white, creating a strong statement in lines. Inspired by historical female warriors, her generally stiff and occasionally asymmetric silhouettes were beautifully contrasted by draped necklines and ladder knit maxi dresses. Models hair is wrapped tightly around their necks and brushes over their faces in a windswept fashion, this neck wrap detail is further emulated in wraparound details on coat collars. Structured and oversizing are key components in all of Barros’ designs and this coupled with strong geometric print makes for a striking visual aesthetic.

Joao Melo Costa followed in style, opening his show with round shoulders and diamante encrusted sleeves. Starchy materials gave garments an oversized fit and contrasted an array of fluid ankle slit trousers. Pinstripe was a key feature throughout and was used in both dresses and two piece trouser suits. Models graced the catwalk in identical flatform shoes adding yet another androgynous aura to proceedings. Oversized ensembles included a ginger coloured embellished top with fluid trousers and a mini skirt and oversized jacket complete with leather tasseling. An autumnal colour palette of navy, cream, purple and black tone complemented the oversized style of Costas’ designs perfectly, making for a very exciting and innovative collection of modern design.
