Setting the scene for Apu Jan’s ‘Turbulence’ AW14 show, a bass guitarist, violinist and DJ churned out live, dark, heady beats. Following on from last season, Apu Jan sought inspiration from nature once more, as well as the frantic hustle of modern society.
Known for his bespoke knitting technique, Jan upped the stakes this season combining super-fine and extra chunky knits, creating both sleek and voluminous silhouettes. Mid length pencil skirts in grey, teal and black were teamed with thick jumpers constructed using a unique stereoscopic 3D technique. Sophisticated and modern digital prints in greyscale and swirling yellow and turquoise added interesting complexity to the collection in an effort to visually interpret the disorder of daily life.
Jan’s
designs are truly contemporary with undertones of traditional oriental
dress. Origami shapes and kimono style draping equally brought soft and sharp lines
to the aesthetic. This contrast of shape and texture cemented Jan’s notion of
‘Turbulence’ perfectly.
Once
again the hat reigned supreme as the designer’s accessory of choice. Oversized
wool hats in floppy and structured styles came in black and digital prints. As expected of the young designer, each garment was
executed to perfection with precision and finesse.
