Born in South Korea, Yong Kyun Shin graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2012 with a Masters in womenswear and has since gone to gain tremendous success. Shin achieved global recognition for his graduate collection, winning the International Talent Support 2010 ‘Fashion Special Prize’ as well as being named by Vogue Italia in their pick of the top 160 emerging designers of 2010.
Today, emerging South Korean designer Shin made his debut at
London Fashion Week with his much anticipated SS14 collection ‘The Broken’.
Inspired by the concept of the damaged forms, Shin explores
the natural beauty that is born from both the deliberate and accidental
deconstruction and deterioration of an object, with a particular emphasis on
the pain and irregularity of this produces.
Designing for the strong bold modern woman, Shin uses
interlacing lines and jagged edges from heavy denim, coupled with tough metal,
organic silk and lace to create strong visual contrasts. The colour palette of
grey, black and dusky pink is soft and feminine but toughened up by slits,
metal embellishments and cut-out boots. Shin represents the exquisite the
beauty that can come from ‘The Broken’.
Shin has proved to be one of the most exciting designers
emerging from the Asian fashion scene today- his success will continue to grow.
